Object: A Dan Mask
Size: 10"
Age: Late 19th or Early 20th Century

Provenance: Louis T Wells Collection; Field Collected by Dr.
George Harley before 1952 ( INV# 80 ); photographed in
1952 in Harley's home

Notes: This early Dan mask is carved from hardwood and still
retains its original feather chin dress.  This example, like many
Dan masks, was placed at a shrine and received offerings.
These offerings being very attractive to rats has resulted in
numerous rat nibbles on the lips, nose and chin of the mask.
